What type of terrain can I expect?

Wyoming offers a wide variety of terrain and you will experience a lot of what it has to offer, including mountains and high desert. For most of the race you will be above 5,000 feet, much of it uninhabited and isolated. At some points during the race you can expect to be as much as 60 miles from civilization, making management of team resources and health key to safety and success. During day two you will climbing up to 10,000’ in elevation.

Is the race format point to point or Rogaine?

The race is a mix of navigation styles. Teams will need to travel between major transition area (TA) points in a prescribed order. Between the TAs there will be navigation challenges that follow a Rogaine format where there will be opportunities to get additional checkpoints in any order.

What kind of bike do I need?

You will need a mountain bike for all bike stages of the race. Cyclo-cross bikes are permitted but not recommended. Ideally the mountain bike will have front suspension.

Do I need bike lights?

Your bike must be equipped with a rear blinking light that must be on at all times when you are riding on public roads. Front lights that have a minimum run time of 12 hours are also required.

Is the race set up with transition areas (places that we will return to and for us to store food/supplies to be used during different legs), or is it a single start and finish (take everything with you)?

There will be multiple transition areas. You can expect to be away from these areas for about 12-14 hours (or longer depending on route choice and strategy), so you will need to carry enough supplies (food) to keep you going for this amount of time. Each team will have to provide their own gear container that will be transported by REV3 between the main TAs.

What gear container can I use?

Teams must use the Rubbermaid 35 Gallon Action Packer as their gear bin. Only one per racer is permitted. These can be purchased from Wal-Mart for $45-$55. If you are flying

in or do not want to transport the gear bin to the race, you can purchase online and have it shipped to the Wal-Mart in Casper, which is located near the host hotel.

What about other gear?

The only other gear that will be transported are paddles and PFDs for the canoe section. All other gear must be transported by the teams or transported in the TA gear bin. Bikes will be transported as necessary between different sections of the race.

Will there be water stops or areas where water is available throughout the course (especially during the bike ride)?

REV3 Adventure will only provide emergency water at the main TAs. You should plan to be away from a main TA for a full 24 hours. There will be some areas to refill water along the course. It is a requirement that teams have a method to treat water so that you can take advantage of “natural” water resources. REV3 will also provide portable water stations at various locations along the course. Resupply options in towns will be minimal.

Can family/friends pass food/water to competitors?

No. No outside assistance is allowed. Outside assistance of any kind will be grounds for disqualification. You  can get assistance from other teams and race staff.

Can the required bike equipment be stored on a bike and carried during the bike legs only, or does it have to be carried during the run, orienteering, and canoe sections?

You only need to have the bike equipment while on the bike. Bike shoes and helmet can also be stored and transported with the bike.

Do I need a support crew?

The race is unsupported. No outside assistance is allowed.

Can my family and friends follow/track my team?

We will be using GPS tracking devices for team tracking during the event and posting regular updates to our social media sites. Your cheering squad will be able to follow your progress on an online map that will update your position every 20 minutes.

How much navigation/map reading will be involved?

You will be required to navigate using various types of maps. Some coordinates will already be plotted; others will have to be plotted using UTM coordinates. Map and compass skills are necessary to locate some of the checkpoints. Mandatory checkpoints will be able to be located with minimal map and compass skills. No GPS units are allowed. Map scales will vary.

How technical is the mountain bike?

There is a mix of single-track, gravel fire road, and pavement. Depending on route choice, the terrain will vary. The single-track

section requires little technical skills but will involve some short steep climbs, loose surface, and small obstacles. Some sections may require you to push or carry your bike.

Do I need a first aid kit?

You will need to bring your own first aid kit as part of your mandatory gear. We recommend the Adventure Medical Kits

Ultralight .7 (http://www.rei.com/product/695383). This has all the required medical supplies. Medical support will be available at the main TAs.

Do I need a dry bag?

It is mandatory to have a method of keeping your gear dry.

Why have mandatory equipment?

Most of the mandatory equipment is required to help you complete the course safely in the event you have an emergency or mechanical issue. Usually the longer the race and the more time you spend on the course, the more equipment you need. The mandatory gear also plays an important part of our overall safety plan for the event. Click here for the ARWS Mandatory Gear List. We may have more to add to the list.

Is there an age limit?

All racers must be 18 or older.

Can I bring my own paddle/boat/PFD?

This year's CCT will feature 2 days of paddling on Class I-II water and flatwater with some portage. Portage wheels are recommended. (The portage sections will be on gravel and pavement. You will need to transport the wheels during the paddle section. The wheels will be transported for you when you are not paddling. They do not have to fit in your paddle gear bag, but they should be labeled with your team number.) Personal PFDs and paddles are permitted and will be transported by Rev3 Adventure. Boats, single-blade paddles, and PFDs will be provided and are included as part of your entry fee. Non-4-person coed teams are permitted (and encouraged) to bring their own boats. All 4-person coed teams will be required to use the boats provided by Rev3 Adventure. The boats provided will be Mad River 16-footer canoes. If you bring your own boat, PFD, and paddle, there is no reduction in the cost of entry fee.

Are there cut-off times?

Yes. If teams fail to meet certain cut-off times, they will be short-coursed and may be forced to skip certain sections of the course. All teams will finish as official but will not be able to collect points that were skipped while shortcoursed, lowering their final achievable ranking.
